Better Health at Work

The Better Health at Work Award (BHAWA) recognises the efforts of employers across the North East and Cumbria in addressing health issues within the workplace. With the support and endorsement of Public Health England, the BHAWA has been taken forward by all of the region's Local Authorities, NHS Trusts, and the Northern TUC.

In December 2019, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was awarded 'Continuing Excellence' and is now working towards the final stage of the awards, 'Maintaining Excellence'. Over the past year we have continued to develop our cornerstone programme, Flourish, to ensure staff are able to liberate their full potential. In our attempt to achieve and maintain a well workforce we have had a range of dedicated campaigns throughout 2019, including: Sleep Well, Personal Health and Let's Talk.

In 2020 we will continue our work on improving the mental health and wellbeing of our staff, and also look at ways in which we can support staff to increase their physical activity levels and maintain a healthy weight. We aim to create sustainable and inclusive health projects that will fit around the multiple shift patterns and abilities of staff working across the Trust.

Become a Flourish Health Champion

Flourish Health Champions (FHCs) play an integral part in shaping the health and wellbeing offer of the Trust. We need FHCs to help communicate messages and health campaigns to all levels of staff, obtain feedback, and gather suggestions for future campaigns and activities. The more FHCs we have the better chance we have of reaching all staff groups and ensuring everyone's voices are heard. We aim to have AT LEAST one FHC in every directorate, but ideally would like them in every team, ward and department!

Physical Activity

Increasing your activity levels can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30% (NHS, 2018). Physical activity has also been shown to improve mental health! Why not see what is going on across the Trust, and the city, to help motivate you to take that first step to increase your physical activity levels!

Mental Wellbeing

The Trust acknowledges the importance of maintaining and improving the mental well-being of its employees, and is continuously looking to implement measures to encourage a healthy work force by identifying and reducing workplace stressors. In 2018 we signed the 'Time to Change Employer Pledge' to show our commitment to reducing stigma and discrimination associated with mental health in the workplace. Read on for further information and tips on improving your mental health.
